In the beachy, artsy town of Laguna Beach, California, a world class fine art event takes place every summer since 1933! The Pageant of the Masters was originally an afterthought publicity gimmick to celebrate the Festival of The Arts which is the main attraction of this town.
This has become one of the most unique theatrical celebrations, attracting visitors from across the globe. As a summer tradition for 85 years, the highest quality colony of artists that participate in this event is astounding.
Knowledge is useless until it is activated. On the last day of the Living in Balance retreat with Deepak Chopra and guests we were given a “Balance Tip of the Day.” This is a simple prescription for applying the teachings from the weekend into our daily lives at home.
Make time to quiet the mind and meditate
Eat a healthy balanced diet with lots of organic, pure, colorful, fruits and vegetables. Pay attention to including the six tastes (sweet, sour, bitter, astringent, salty, pungent) into each meal. Drink lots of pure, filtered water (without ice) and herbal elixirs and teas.
Move your body, take breaks from desk work by getting up every half in hour if possible. Take in deep breaths, get outside in nature, walk barefoot and get grounded on the grass or sand.
Cultivate loving relationships. Connect with your heart center and find ways to share your positive feelings with others. Get and give hugs. Healing touch is vital to health, so go and hug a loved one or a friend every chance you get. Don’t miss the opportunity to pet a dog or any pet and even a tree.
Enjoy a good belly laugh at least once a day, uncontrollable laughter is the best medicine.
Release emotional toxins. Take a moment to let go of worries, stress, and negative feelings.
Make a ritual of good habits that lead to restful sleep. It is essential, and especially remove all technology from the bedroom or at least shut down and put your phone, laptop and iPad to bed.
Another Way To Balance Is With This Sleep Prep Tip
Unplug two to three hours before bed. Take a soothing bath with aromatherapy (with lavender and Epsom salts). Keep a journal and make a gratitude list. Ask soul questions and reflect back on the day, so you can release the experience of it all and prepare for sweet dreams.
With all the different choices and new scientific discoveries on how to live your best life, the first step is finding a deeper understanding and balance in your whole-body system and to understand how everything in your consciousness has an effect on your health.
Since my experience at the Living in Balance seminar, I have committed to making some significant changes in my life. I appreciate more fully that the key is to be mindful of what is life-affirming and empowering and to learn how to listen to my own inner guidance.
As Deepak Chopra shares: “Humans are not biological robots. We live for meaning, for the personal value of every experience. The body metabolizes our experiences and sends the message to every cell, while the mind, in its own domain, processes experience in terms of sensations, images, thoughts, and feelings. Nothing fuses the whole-system effects of love and non-love like the human heart, which needs to be understood as more than a physical organ.”
This is the final instalment in our series covering the Living in Balance retreat. You can read part one here, and part two (which looks at a new form of anxiety) here.
Reprinted from my story in Longevity Magazine.Chopra Center, La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, California
I can’t resist the temptation to begin this story with the words of Deepak Chopra, the keynote speaker at the Living in Balance retreat I recently attended. He says, “To live without love, compassion, or any other spiritual value creates a state of such severe imbalance that every cell yearns to correct it. Ultimately, that is what lies behind the onset of disease; the body is sending a message that something lacking in the present—an imbalance existing somewhere—has given rise to highly visible, unarguable, physical symptoms.”
The man TIME magazine described as “one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century” who introduced us to the Seven Spiritual Law of Success, opened up this life-changing seminar at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa, in California.
We Are All Stardust
As he sauntered onto the stage the excitement among the attendees was palpable. I must admit, I too was mesmerized by his extraordinary persona. Deepak Chopra has a distinctive personal style. He made a statement in his black Nehru vest, with the red piping trim, teamed with a black turtleneck shirt and bright red suede Nike sneakers and of course his signature eyeglass frames. Along with his rock star magnetism, he exudes this almost uncanny sense of calm and tranquility.
During his opening address, he shared with us deeply thought-provoking topics. Speaking about the nature of existence in the universe, he made the most complex quantum principles sound simply poetic. He explained that we are all stardust. That the gene, a unit of heredity, is actually a protein code (enzyme) and he shared how our genomics influences our lives.
First there is the one cell, and then approximately 25 000 human genes that differentiate into the whole body and that our body is some 30-40 trillion cells, or more (the Milky Way has 250 billion ± 150 billion) and that the average cell will divide between 50-70 times before cell death. To make a body, there is morphogenesis, to give rise to form.
The Deepak Chopra Way
From that extraordinary introduction going forward, I would experience a virtual feast for the mind, body, and spirit that would shift my own way of thinking about health.
The event progressed with a seamless program of experts in the field of Ayurvedic healing. It provided the foundation for lifestyle enhancement through the Ayurvedic principles of preventative self-care to last a lifetime. Each presenter shared their personal passage into the world of alternative, integrative, complementary and functional medicine. They revealed how they too had arrived at the Chopra Institute at a pivotal time in their lives. Some were from the hardcore corporate America and had dropped out to follow their dream of living a more balanced lifestyle. Others were in mainstream medicine and realized there was a more comprehensive approach to heal the body, from the inside-out. They followed their inner guidance to this particular practice of wellness and became a beacon of light to share with patients.
Our first introductory lecture was with Dr. Sheila Patel. She introduced us to the basics of the ancient Ayurvedic healing. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems. It was developed more than 3 000 years ago in India. It’s based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. It’s a complete system of health, and the key is to identify what’s getting in the way of our natural healing. It is a consciousness-based healing system, beyond the physical.
I had the opportunity to experiment becoming unplugged by escaping the tech universe for a couple of days and chilling out with the Chopra Center. This was a dream come true! I had the privilege of attending the Living in Balance Retreat through The Chopra Center, which was held at a lovely setting, the Sheraton Westin Carlsbad Resort and Spa. While attending I also participated in my own self-imposed digital detox from the usual suspects, my Mac Book Pro, my new iPhone (way beyond my skill set, with all the bells and whistles) and iPad.The experience was a delight for all of the senses. Detoxing from the matrix of technology and all the accoutrements while learning a comprehensive approach to a healthy, balanced lifestyle was just what the Doctor ordered.
In celebration of March 9 National Day of Unplugging, I was prepped by four jam packed days listening to best experts in functional medicine. The Chopra Center Medical experts on the leading edge, sharing the latest in self-care and the Ayurveda, the Ancient healing tradition.
According to the recent study from Pew research, they were able to establish a measurement for stress that is known as the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). To do so they created a list of 10 questions for participants to answer, which explored the relationship between a variety of digital technology uses and psychological stress.
Dr. Deepak Chopra explaining the benefits of Primordial Sound Meditation and getting unplugged!
“These technologies are said to takeover people’s lives, creating time and social pressures that put people at risk from the negative physical and psychological health effects that can result from stress.”
Because of this increased stress, there is a growing emphasis on overall well-being and wellness sweeping through modern culture. It is also a backlash from the influx of new addictions such as the fears of not being connected, like problematic internet use or nomophobia (no-mobile-phone-phobia). With the fast paced onslaught of technological advancements, there are now scientific studies finding a rising trend in anxiety disorders around not having access to a mobile phone.
The best way I’ve found to combat these modern day stressors is to commit to a mindful meditation practice. We learned how to do the Primordial Sound Meditation.
In addition to basic principles of Ayurveda, which focus on the mind-body connection, eating a balanced diet of six tastes, (sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter, and astringent) there are several key points.
In Ayurveda, the five elements that are found in all living things—ether, air, fire, water, and earth—are the building blocks of life. While this foundation unites all humans, the manifestation of those elements through the doshas is what gives rise to our differences. How the three doshas appear, and in what proportion, is what makes each of us unique.
The 2018 Awards season is upon us. After the recent Golden Globes show, we are seeing a trend in solidarity for women, including #TimeIsUP and #MeToo movement. The unity was palpable and will become a precedent for the future in aspects of our culture.
“Historically, the Globes kicks off awards season, usually “a two-month crush of red carpets, cocktail parties, speech-making and schmoozing that culminates with the Oscars on March 4.” Andrea Mandell, USA TODAY
Although this year they wore all black, the theme also demonstrates that solidarity can still be sexy, with some choosing revealing necklines and body contouring gowns. In addition, beauty is still de rigueur, especially when exuding a powerful radiance that comes from the inside out.
The Telegraph headline, “Oprah Winfrey Steals The Show on Night Dominated By Women’s Voices,” who became the first black woman to win the Cecil B DeMille award for her contribution to the world of entertainment. Her speech will linger on in the hearts and minds of everyone who had the opportunity to hear her acceptance and many will hold their heads up high, knowing there is a ‘new day on the horizon.’ She not only stole the show with her speech, but her trim and elegant silhoutte was highlighted in her gown and youthful appearance.
What is usually a secret, is how these stars are committed to preparing for these shows months in advance. From head to toe, every inch is mindfully intentional to be as lovely as possible. From hiring fitness and nutrition specialists to enrollment in a meal planning and delivery service, they go all out to portray their best selves. Perhaps the most important focus is ‘your face is your fortune’ and thus the road to perfection begins with the skin. While many have succumb in recent years to plastic surgery, most are adhering to the trend of non-invasive fillers and Botox to get that 5-10 years younger, plumper look.
It is widely evident that “probably 60 or 70 percent” of men and women rely on injections to perfect their red-carpet look.
While there are dozens of doctors in Hollywood who cater to the beauty needs of the stars, only a select few in demand. They are the leading edge professionals that focus on minimally invasive procedures to make sure their clients appear as natural as possible. Because of the trend towards less extreme makeovers, many patients are more comfortable trying out the fillers and new procedures that don’t require a lot of down time and have more gradual results.
One highly trained medical doctor who is well respected in developing non-invasive treatments, Dr. Sam Assassa, CEO of Beverly Hills Aesthetics, has dedicated a majority of his career to educational training. For over 10 years, he has trained over 5,000 practitioners worldwide and conducted hands-on courses including Aesthetics 101, Basic and Advanced level Botulinum toxin and Dermal Fillers Training, Peri-orbital Dermal Filler Technique, TCA Peels, Basic and Advanced level Liposuction, Liposculpting, Pan Facial Fat Grafting, Facelift Preceptorships, Suspension Face Lift Training, The One Hour Facelift Course and Advances in Facial Surgery Courses. His artistic talents and clinical judgment makes him a leading educator on restoring beauty and enhancing wellbeing through aesthetic medicine and surgery.

One thing is for sure, there are many options out there, and finding the right combination of treatments is the key to a beautiful outcome. With Hi-definition cameras and flashing lights, it takes more than clever makeup to achieve the absolute radiance and flawless complexion. The most sought after are the ones that have more natural yet permanent results, and last beyond the ‘Cinderella Effect” of secret beauty tricks. That is why most choose the year round maintenance at a medical aesthetics clinic specializing in non-surgical treatments to achieve the best results.
The old expression, “A woman can never be too rich or too thin,” attributed to Wallis Simpson, the late Duchess of Windsor, is often used humorously, but there is a literal meaning – Simpson’s own life was devoted to being, well, too rich and too thin!
There are a couple of other glitterati and fashionistas that have gone overboard to the extreme detriment of their health. The thin-obsessed culture has been prevalent for several decades, while most models and actresses embrace this as if it was de rigueur.
However, the current climate of being too thin and low body weight has been experiencing a backlash. Big, bold and beautiful is becoming more visible since big, bold and beautiful is more of the majority these days. But shows like The Big Fat Truth, From Fit to Fat to Fit, and many others are becoming more and more focused on finding a healthy way to become fit and stay fit!
One of the x-skinny-obsessed has discovered her own method to become healthy and trim by overcoming her eating disorder through a fun, revolutionary dance-based fitness program. Misty Tripoli triumphed over her obsession with being too thin by developing The Body Groove. While most exercise workout videos are based on one-size-fits-all choreography, Body Groove allows everyone to create a workout that is just right for their body. It’s a different way to work out that doesn’t have you just mindlessly following an instructor’s moves. Instead, you’re given the basic choreography and then it’s up to you to make each movement your own by adding exactly the style that you want – whatever feels right to you! Not coordinated? No worries. Not a dancer? That’s okay. No rhythm? No one cares. Body Groove is designed to move your body in the way the music makes you feel. When you do it your way, it can never be wrong. So tune in, be kind to yourself, be gentle and find your groove!
With the global crises of obesity tipping the scales, there are so many claims that call out to you with the promise of a quick fix, with little or no ‘pain no gain’ results — most are suffering from the instant gratification of water loss and then plateaus. However, you don’t have to beat up your body to experience results. Working out smarter instead of harder, having fun and enjoying yourself is the key to getting off the dieting yo-yo syndrome. Body Groove seems too good to be true~ but everyone seems to be experiencing the kind of results that others promise but don’t deliver.
“The moment I stopped following traditional workouts and started allowing my body to move in its own way, I started to feel awesome. The secret to getting a healthy body is listening to your body. When you listen to your body, you learn to respect your body! My stress levels came down, my eating disorder vanished and the more I danced, the faster my body melted away the unhealthy fat that had been bothering me for years. And now, years later, Body Groove has gone international and it has literally changed the lives of thousands of people,” smiles Misty.
These exercises are so very simply, brief enough not to get overwhelmed and diverse enough not to get bored! They can also be done by anyone regardless of their health and ability because you control how you move your body. You don’t have to look like anyone else or do it like anyone else. Hey, and here’s a plus – if you’ve never been a dancer or thought you couldn’t dance, this is a chance to see what your body can do as you allow it to move naturally within the rhythm of the music. I am extremely overjoyed with this product!!! JoJo Jack
Moving and exercising your body should never be a punishment. The Body Groove routines are completely different from anything you’ve ever tried and that’s the reason they’re so successful and why so many people absolutely love them
“I LOVE Body Groove! It’s fun and a great workout. It’s the first exercise program that I have stuck with for more than a few days. I recommend everyone try it!” Helen Nairn Manko
Listen to what Sparkpeople.com had to say when they awarded Body Groove the “Stuff We Love” review:
“It’s the most innovative workout I have ever experienced.”
“Misty is so encouraging and approachable throughout, and her style of cueing is about listening to yourself: doing what feels right for you that day, changing that the next day, and allowing for a variety day after day.”
“I think these workouts are perfect for exercisers of all intensity levels and mobility levels because it’s so easy to do whatever works for you.”
Body Groove appeals to a different kind of person – the person who prizes their independence, their true worth, and who doesn’t want to mindlessly follow a choreographed workout. The truth is that anyone can do it!
“The difference between style and fashion is quality.” – Giorgio Armani
Top innovators are now working with high-end materials such as Titanium which has inspired the most creative designers to branch out with a new range of products. One in particular who has crossed over from mastering other disciplines into the men’s luxury accessories is Richard Solloshi of Solloshi Ltd.He is well known for his innovations in different domains of design including product design, industrial design, architecture and interior space design.
Solloshi has discovered the key to great design by revisiting and reinterpreting everyday objects. By transforming them into true masterpieces through meticulous models with the application of cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. This is what the culture views as high art. Form follows function moves into redefining the ideal of practical luxury through advanced manufacturing technologies.
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” – Leonardo da Vinci
A creative mastermind can transcend the barriers of different industries to bring forth a new way of using materials that were once confined to the industrial world. They key to this refined brand is melding the elements of style in architecture, interior design, while using the principles of industrial design to creating luxurious wearable art.
What one might imagine as something that will exist decades into the future, Titanium is as strong as steel but much less dense. It is therefore important as an alloying agent with many metals including aluminum, molybdenum and iron. These alloys are mainly used in aircraft, spacecraft and missiles because of their low density and ability to withstand extremes of temperature. The advantage is like Superman with steel-like strength but also lightweight, like aluminum.
Titanium bankcard holder weighs just 2.4 ounces, lighter than your current leather wallet.
Titanium is synonymous with strength and durability. Even the name is apropos after the Titans, Greek gods of myth, this element is used widespread crossing the barriers of industry, in airliners and lacrosse sticks. While most know of it’s sunscreen qualities, who would imagine it was also used for body piercings and most recently in the bio-medical field and equipment.
This material is now ubiquitous, where it seems that titanium is being designed into new applications in the fashion industry – including jewelry, in which it appears a mini industry is developing. titanium has been promoted as a metal that is light weight, durable, and fashionable. Each day it seems that titanium is being designed into new applications in the fashion industry – including jewelry, in which it appears a mini industry is developing.
This innovative luxury brand is branching out into bankcard holders with a standard bankcard as well as a luxury edition. The brand is moving into other accessories like the nautical titanium bracelet, titanium money clip, a jewelry edition cufflink and a titanium nautical case. The applications seem endless, with so many options including men’s wallets, luxury cigar accessories, including humidors and mini-humidors, and creating a buzz over titanium jewels.
It takes an outlier with a keen sense of design to become trend setting luxury product designer. One who has broken all the restraints set by the conventionalists with their innovative concepts is Richard Solloshi. He is one of those mastermind innovators who has dedicated his high art to utilization of titanium.
“This high-tech material requires special skills in design and unique manufacturing methods. Despite the fact that this level of precision and design requires countless hours of engineering, almost all of his creations are limited editions to preserve their unique nature.”
‘The Solloshi Titanium Bank Card Holder does an ordinary task in an extraordinary fashion. It will hold your bank cards securely – that’s the ordinary bit – and it will amaze you for years or decades to come with its exceptional workmanship that remains unchallenged by any of the others – this, you guessed it, is the extraordinary bit.’
This is precisely the kind of luxury accessories 007 would choose, because it they are lightweight and strong. It has the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metallic element. It weighs almost the same as aluminum but is stronger than steel. It is corrosion and scratch resistant even in sea water, aqua regia and chlorine. (For those underwater espionage adventures where he arrives from the sea and ends up in a Tux on an exclusive private island luxe resort) Durable – It is more durable than gold and has become a popular choice for designer jewelry and stylish accoutrements.
We are living in a world where superheroes and movies are ubiquitous icons of merging science fiction with science fact. Even the gadgets of James Bond’s iconic world of espionage and intrigue are not just some fantastic fiction on the silver screen, but actually exist or are soon to be released now. In fact, James Bond has defined an era of men’s style and is the most influential figure in menswear and he doesn’t even exist!
The key is luxe tech and men’s luxury fashion accessories today exude a sense of confidence and refinement. ‘007’ is the epitome of a fine gentleman with taste and style ‘who appreciates the luxury touch only a precision crafted item can provide’. Thus we are entering a new era where high tech meets high touch in the men’s luxury accessories trend.
Although the Bond brand is old school, it is synonymous with the late twentieth century heroes. Most of the stars, like Roger Moore, Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan are now film star style icons and being replaced by younger, more dynamic, powerful stars like Daniel Craig. In sync with this phenomenon is the trend in the men’s luxury accessories market.

When Thriveglobal.com announced they were seeking writers to share about their experiences with depression, I was hesitant to share. Who really wants to talk about this?
Many creatives suffer from mood swings. It’s what gets our juices flowing, uplifts and inspires us to go beyond the boundaries of the mass consciousness. It’s what makes us Outliers. As author Malcolm Gladwell refers to many of the literati of our day, the ones who have gone beyond the boundaries and become uber success stories. Outliers deals with the cultural and societal forces that give rise to opportunistic individuals. “person out of the ordinary “who doesn’t fit into our normal understanding of achievement.”
